Volunteer Opportunities
What kinds of projects does New York Cares offer?
We offer thousands of volunteer opportunities throughout the five boroughs, ranging from one-time projects to those requiring a more significant commitment. We work with nearly 1,000 nonprofit organizations helping children, adults, and the community. Learn more.
How much time do I have to commit?
That is entirely up to you. Our goal is to make volunteering accessible to everyone, regardless of how busy you are.
How old do I have to be? You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer on New York Cares' ongoing volunteer projects. We offer some projects designed for family volunteering. Just click the "Family Friendly" box on the Search Projects page. Also, learn more about Youth Service Opportunities.
How do I sign up for projects?
Once you have attended orientation, visit our Search Projects page and sign up online.
What is a Team Leader? Team Leaders manage projects on behalf of New York Cares. They've attended training and work closely with our staff to make sure the project runs smoothly. Learn more
Who should I contact if I have questions about a project?
Your Team Leader can answer most questions. When you sign up, you will receive an automatic e-mail with the Team Leader's contact information.
Can I bring other people with me to a project? No. All volunteers must have attended a New York Cares orientation and must register individually for each project they wish to attend.
How do I remove myself from a project I can no longer attend?
New York Cares plans volunteer projects to meet specific goals for a specific number of volunteers, so it is crucial to deregister using the link on "My Projects" so another volunteer can take your place. This link is active until 24 hours before a project begins. If you need to cancel within 24 hours, please contact your Team Leader. Volunteers who miss three or more projects in a six-month period without deregistering will no longer be able to participate in New York Cares projects.
I'm having problems signing up for projects. Make sure that you're logged in and have attended orientation. If you have attended orientation, are logged in, and are still having problems, contact Volunteer Relations at info@newyorkcares.org or 212-228-5000.
Can New York Cares verify my hours for school, court, or other requirements?
We can verify your volunteer hours for our ongoing projects, days of service, or holiday programs. We can't verify hours completed through referral opportunities. You can print a list of your volunteer hours by logging in, selecting "My Projects," and then clicking "Project History." We can also provide formal letters of verification with 7-10 days notice. Contact our Volunteer Relations Team at info@newyorkcares.org or 212-228-5000 to request verification of hours.
What if I have an idea for a new project?
Let us know! We're always looking for new projects and people to lead them. E-mail us at info@newyorkcares.org.
